I Love What I Do ~ First Circus at Almost 82
Some days in caregiving just hit a little different.
This is one of those days.
I have a client — we’ll call him Huff (name changed for privacy). Huff is almost 82 years old, and if you sat down and talked with him, you’d think he’s done just about everything there is to do in life.
Huff has been around the world multiple times.
Served in the military.
Taught in Korea.
Traveled from China into Russia… by train.
German is his first language, which makes conversations pretty fun. Huff will be mid-sentence in English and throw in German words like I’m just supposed to understand — and I always make him translate. It’s kind of our thing.
Huff has lived a full life.
But the other day, something small turned into something big.
On our way back to his home, we passed a billboard for the Shriners Circus.
Huff looked at it and casually mentioned… he had never been.
At 82 years old.
Never a circus.
Not once.
And I don’t know why, but that stuck with me.
It made me stop and think — I’ve been to the circus a handful of times in my life… and here Huff is, someone who has seen parts of the world most people never will — different countries, cultures, experiences — and yet something so simple, so classic, so childlike… never happened for him.
And I knew right then… I wanted to change that.
So I reached out to his daughter.
I told her that my adopted dad is part of the Shriners Circus and asked if I could take Huff. I mentioned he had never been before.
And wouldn’t you know… she said yes.
And even better — she’s joining us.
I don’t even think she knew Huff had never gone.
So here I am.
Sitting outside the Summit Arena, waiting for them to show up… for Huff’s very first circus.
And honestly?
I’m probably just as excited as they are.
Because this isn’t just about a circus.
It’s about a moment they get to share together.
A first… at 82 years old.
I’ll update you all on how it goes.
Because moments like this…
this is exactly why I love what I do.
Like always,
With love and care,
