What My Clients Have Taught Me
Over my years in caregiving, one of the greatest gifts I've received isn't something you can put on a care plan or a schedule. It's the lessons I've learned from the people I've cared for.
Some clients have taught me history through stories of places they've been, wars they've lived through, and how different life looked when they were growing up. Some have taught me not to take things for granted because they know firsthand how quickly life can change. Others have taught me to slow down and appreciate the moment instead of constantly worrying about what's next.
I've had wonderful ladies teach me about marriage, family, and what it means to stand beside someone through all of life's ups and downs. I've had gentlemen share marriage advice, stories of loss, and the grief that comes with loving someone deeply. Through their stories, I've learned that there is no single definition of a good life, a good marriage, or a good family. Every person's journey looks a little different.
But if there is one lesson that seems to come from nearly every client I've met, it's this: love looks different for everyone, and humor is often what gets us through the hard days.
I've heard stories that made me laugh until my stomach hurt. I've listened to memories that brought tears to my eyes. I've witnessed resilience, kindness, heartbreak, devotion, and strength in ways I never expected.
People often thank caregivers for what we do. The truth is, my clients have given me just as much in return. They have taught me lessons I couldn't have learned from a textbook, a class, or a training program.
They have taught me how to slow down.
How to listen.
How to laugh.
How to love.
And for that, I will always be grateful.
